High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Albury Public School is committed to providing various opportunities for students to demonstrate their potential, both within the standard curriculum and through co-curricular and enrichment activities. These pathways will be designed to elicit potential across the intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical domains.

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

Kindergarten - Year 6

Leadership opportunities: Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Representatives

Each class elects two PBL representatives who demonstrate our school’s PBL values. These students play an important leadership role in promoting positive behaviour across the school.

Our PBL representatives meet fortnightly to:

  • Share observations about positive behaviour in their class, stage and across the school.
  • Identify areas where behaviour can improve, such as specific settings or situations.
  • Help create discussion scenarios for classrooms that reinforce expected behaviours.
  • Plan and organise PBL acknowledgements, rewards and celebrations that recognise positive behaviour.

Through this role, students develop leadership, communication and problem-solving skills while helping to build a safe, respectful and responsible school culture.

Write Around the Murray School Program

This program gives students the chance to meet and work with some of Australia’s best authors and illustrators in a fun and creative setting.
Each year, students can enter two exciting writing competitions — the Write Around the Murray Short Story Competition and the Barry Young River of Stories Competition — to showcase their storytelling skills.

Albury Public School Choir

Our school choir is open to all students who love to sing. It helps students build confidence, develop their musical skills, and experience the joy of performing as a team.
The choir performs at school and community events, including the Albury Wodonga Eisteddfod, giving students a sense of pride and connection.

Craft Club

Craft Club is a fun and relaxing space where students can get creative, make things, and connect with others who enjoy art and craft.

Chess Club

Chess Club is a great way for students to challenge their minds while having fun. It helps build focus, memory, and strategic thinking — and it’s a great way to make new friends!

Playing the ukulele supports hand-eye coordination, pattern recognition, and rhythm awareness, while also nurturing creative self-expression. Students in the group work collaboratively to build a varied repertoire, learning the importance of timing, harmony, and mutual support within an ensemble. The ukulele’s accessibility makes it ideal for boosting confidence and musical curiosity, and the group's performance pathway—including school events—offers a sense of purpose and pride in shared achievement.

Year 2 - Year 6

Albury Public School Recorder

Recorder lessons give students the chance to develop musical skills, including reading music, fine motor coordination, and concentration. Playing an instrument also strengthens memory and auditory processing, creating a strong foundation for future musical learning.

Students perform as part of an ensemble, where they learn teamwork, patience, and how to listen and blend with others. The group takes part in school and community performances, including collaborations with other schools and the Albury Wodonga Eisteddfod. It’s a fun and rewarding way for students to grow as confident, cooperative performers.
