1850 - 2025
Celebrating 175 years of education at Albury Public School
Our planning is underway for this momentous celebration and achievement this year.
We are organising a series of events and celebrations for Week 3 of Term 3 2025 to coincide with Education Week 2025. We will be hosting an art show, historical memorabilia, open classrooms and dress up days/family picnic, amongst other events, including a cocktail party.
Please keep an eye on Facebook and our school website for updates, events and happenings. We will also be reaching out to families and friends who attended Albury PS to assist with the planning, memorabilia and special research projects.
A huge thank you to Monika Boldogh who has donated her expertise in graphic arts and created our amazing logos, banners and artwork to commemorate our special occasion of 175 years.
A brief history of Albury Public School
Albury Public School opened on 25 July 1850 as the Albury National School. As such, it was the first NSW government school in Albury. It was situated on a one-acre site on the south-eastern corner of Dean and Kiewa Streets. It was a two-room brick building.
Henry Rich was the first teacher. In the first year there were 73 students, and these ranged in age from 3 to 18 years of age.
In October 1859, an acre on Olive Street, was purchased. The new National School was opened on Monday 13 January 1862. The new building contained three teaching rooms and had an attached residence on the southern side. The building is currently occupied by Year 1 and is affectionately called “The Annexe.”
Over the years the school site grew as additional land was purchased.
In 1882 “The West” was opened and housed the girls. It is the old part of the building which faces Olive Street. The Infants and boys remained in “The Annexe”.
The school’s enrolment was 647 pupils in 1890. In 1891 “The Castle” was built. Also, in this year the Boys and Girls Departments were established with “The Castle” housing the Boys School, the Girls school in “The West” and the Infants in “The Annexe.”
By 1912 the education on-site facilities offered were: elementary schooling and post primary education, Technical classes, and an Evening school for boys. In 1930, the secondary section transferred to Albury High, and it then became Albury Public School with classes from Kindergarten to Year 6.
A new Infants building was opened in 1941. It replaced the old 1862 Infants building (the current Annexe) and is now commonly called “The Manor”
The Hall was built in 1964, while in 1973 the Library/Administration building was opened. Then in 1975 the Canteen and Gym were built.
The Castle was remodelled in 1991. The Department of School Education District Office occupied the bottom floor from 1991 to 1996.
The Sesquicentenary (150th anniversary) for Albury Public School occurred in 2000. Also in 2000, the P&C funded the covering of the basketball court. Then 2011 saw the building of “The Lodge.”
In 2025, Albury Public School will be 175 years old.
